We usually know that wheezing is the typical clinical manifestation of asthma, but in fact, cough is the most common symptom of asthma; cough variant asthma is a special type of asthma, which can occur at any age without gender difference; episodic cough is the only or main symptom, dry cough is the main symptom, mostly without sputum, or a little foamy sputum; some patients have chest tightness or dyspnea, but no typical wheezing performance; cough is persistent or repeated. The cough is persistent or recurrent, often triggered by upper respiratory tract infection, cold air inhalation, strenuous exercise, etc., and aggravated late at night or early in the morning; physical examination and chest radiograph are normal; bronchial excitation test or diastolic test is often positive; 24-hour peak expiratory flow variability rate is increased; treatment with asthma calming drugs is effective. Because of the atypical clinical symptoms, the diagnosis is often missed or misdiagnosed. Because of the failure to get timely diagnosis and effective treatment, the condition does not improve, and most patients can develop into typical asthma with wheezing after a period of time. The essence of cough variant asthma is the same as typical asthma, but there are obvious differences; the diagnosis of cough variant asthma relies on an experienced specialist to make, and other diseases causing chronic cough need to be excluded. Its treatment is the same as typical asthma, with inhaled glucocorticoids (fluticasone propionate), oral montelukast sodium, and traditional Chinese medicine; bronchodilation and symptomatic treatment alone are not appropriate.
