How long can a cast be removed from a broken hand

The time to remove the cast of a hand fracture is related to the characteristics of the fracture, the dislocation, and the specific part of the fracture in the hand, and cannot be generalized. If the fracture is a simple phalangeal or metacarpal fracture with no obvious misalignment, the cast can be removed in about 4-6 weeks with conservative treatment. In the case of a comminuted fracture, healing is usually difficult or slow and may require external fixation in a cast for about 2 months. In the case of carpal navicular fractures, the fracture is prone to non-union and bone necrosis, and may require cast immobilization for about 3 months. If the cast loosens after the local swelling subsides during the fixation period, a follow-up visit to the orthopedic department of the hospital should be made in a timely manner to replace the cast rest to prevent displacement of the fracture end. After the fracture of the hand, patients should pay attention to the fact that they should not perform heavy physical activities or pick up heavy objects for three months, and pay attention to proper rest and ensure sufficient sleep to promote the recovery of the fracture.
