Pleural effusion is divided into symptomatic management and treatment of the primary cause. The symptomatic management is to relieve compression and improve respiratory function by pumping fluid, whereas for the treatment of the primary disease, it is to reduce pleural fluid production.
The first priority is to relieve the pressure of fluid on the lung, followed by reducing the production of pleural fluid. Treatment of the primary tumor disease may reduce pleural fluid production to some extent. In addition, try to maintain negative fluid balance, that is, fluid intake is less than fluid loss, which can reduce fluid exudation; for patients with hypoproteinemia, diuresis after albumin injection can be used to improve colloid osmotic pressure, which can reduce fluid accumulation. For patients with respiratory insufficiency, respiratory support can be given according to the situation.
