What is prolactin

Prolactin is a hormone that promotes the development and secretion of the mammary glands and is usually produced more during pregnancy and after childbirth. A moderate amount of prolactin in the body is beneficial to a woman’s menstruation and pregnancy. If prolactin is normally high, it can cause menstrual disorders and lead to undeveloped follicles, which can affect pregnancy, and if it is too high, you should be alert to the occurrence of pituitary tumors and need a CT or MRI of the pituitary gland to rule out the occurrence of pituitary tumors. Usually, prolactin is affected by many factors, so it is best not to confirm the diagnosis with a mild elevation, but to review it and exclude elevations caused by taking some drugs, such as reserpine, antihistamines, chlorpromazine, etc. It is also important to exclude elevations caused by emotions, exercise, sexual intercourse, surgery, shingles, hunger and eating. In conclusion, normal prolactin is generally within 25, a hormone that promotes mammary gland and milk secretion. If you check prolactin it is best to have your blood drawn between 9am and 11am. The physiological elevation is usually seen during pregnancy and postpartum to prepare for breastfeeding, but the pathological elevation can be seen in pituitary tumors, menstrual disorders and thyroid disorders, etc. It is also important to exclude the elevation caused by medication, emotions, hunger, eating and exercise, etc. Do not use medication blindly, but take it as prescribed by your doctor.
