The treatment of pneumonia depends on its possible causes and the condition of the patient. The usual approach is to give antibiotics that are effective for the bacteria most likely to cause the infection. If you get pneumonia in a hospital or other medical facility (such as a nursing home), you may need to use antibiotics that can treat a variety of resistant bacteria. If influenza is occurring in your area, you may need to use an antiviral instead of an antibiotic; or, you may need to add an antiviral to an antibiotic. If the immune system is suppressed, your doctor may also choose to treat a fungal infection. In some cases, corticosteroids may also be required. If breathing is felt to be difficult at low oxygen levels, oxygen will be required. If hospitalized for a suspected highly contagious disease (such as influenza or tuberculosis), you may be placed in isolation.
