Recently, the Epilepsy Center of the hospital successfully completed another difficult epilepsy surgery, which successfully removed the epileptogenic focus and freed the child from the pain of daily seizures. Yang XX, female, 7 years old, from Sichuan. She came to the hospital with recurrent seizures for 1.5 years. Before the hospitalization, the child had been to several hospitals and had tried three anti-epileptic drugs, but the results were not satisfactory, and the child had 3 to 5 seizures every day, which were characterized by twitching of the limbs. The illness seriously affected the child’s life and his academic performance gradually decreased. After hospitalization, under the auspices of the chief and deputy chief of the medical department, several related departments held detailed discussions and formulated a thorough treatment plan. Meanwhile, pre-surgical preparation, cranial MRI, long-range video EEG and neuropsychological evaluation were completed. Based on the information provided by the EEG and MRI, the child was first operated with subcortical electrodes and deep electrodes implanted with the cooperation of the anesthesiology department. After the surgery, he returned to the ward and continued to monitor the EEG and perform localization of functional brain areas. One week later, the child underwent a second surgery, during which the epileptogenic focus was successfully removed. After careful care by the medical and nursing teams from the Department of Surgery 4, Department of Medicine 4 and PICU, the child is now recovering well and has not experienced any further seizures. There are about 9 million patients with epilepsy in China, including about 6 million with active epilepsy, 20%-30% of which cannot be controlled by medical treatment, i.e. drug-refractory epilepsy. About 1.2 to 1.8 million people with epilepsy in China need to get surgical treatment and undergo epilepsy surgery. Epilepsy surgery is a complex project that requires the collaboration and close cooperation of multiple departments including neurosurgery, neurology, neurophysiology, radiology, neuropsychology, pathology, intensive care unit, anesthesiology, and nursing department. This successful surgical case proves once again that our Epilepsy Center is capable of providing standardized, comprehensive and effective antiepileptic treatment services to the majority of epileptic patients.
