Liu Xinjian, Department of Hematology, Henan Cancer Hospital International Myelodysplastic Syndrome World Awareness Day – The Anemia Center of Hematology Department of Henan Cancer Hospital held Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) patient education activity In the afternoon of October 25, on the occasion of the first International Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) World Awareness Day, the Department of Hematology of Henan Cancer Hospital held Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) patient education activity in synchronization with international. This is also the first time to hold MDS patient education public welfare activity in Henan Province. More than 40 MDS patients and their families from the province participated in this event. The purpose of this event was to attract public attention to MDS through influential social activities and to initiate care activities for MDS patients. At the same time, the event also enabled MDS patients to have a proper understanding of the disease, the correct diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The meeting was hosted by Liu Xinjian, director of the anemia ward (nine wards) of hematology department of Henan Cancer Hospital, who firstly introduced the meaning of MDS patient education activities and the significance of the International MDS Organization to establish the International Myelodysplastic Syndrome World Awareness Day. Director Liu Xinjian said that MDS is a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic stem cell diseases, with an annual incidence of about 5 per 100,000 in the general population in Europe and the United States, and about 26 per 100,000 in people older than 70 years old. There is no data on the incidence of this disease in China. The disease is mostly seen in the elderly abroad, and the age of onset in China is younger than abroad. The disease is characterized by three main features: 1. pathological hematopoiesis of the bone marrow, including the erythrocyte system, leukocyte system and megakaryocytes; 2. ineffective hematopoiesis of the bone marrow, and the resulting decrease in blood cells. This includes simple erythrocytopenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and holocytopenia. The disease is often characterized by simple erythrocytopenia and allogeneic cytopenia. 3. High risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia. According to foreign data, about one-third of patients will be converted to acute myeloid leukemia. Director Liu Xinjian emphasized: MDS is a group of diseases that are difficult to diagnose and treat, other hospitals in our province do not have specialized departments for diagnosing and treating MDS, and the anemia department of the hematology department of Henan Cancer Hospital often receives misdiagnosed and mistreated MDS patients. The purpose of this activity is to let patients know what is the standardized and scientific diagnosis and treatment of MDS, so that patients will not take a wrong path and delay the diagnosis and treatment. Liu Xinjian said, hematology anemia department of Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital is the only specialized department in Henan Province that specializes in diagnosing and treating anemia diseases, which can correctly diagnose and prognostically type MDS from 4 levels: cytology, immunology, cytogenetics and molecular biology, thus ensuring scientific and standardized treatment for patients. During the meeting, Dr. Zhou Hu from the MDS Center of Hematology Department of Henan Cancer Hospital gave a detailed explanation on the causes of MDS, pathogenesis, correct diagnosis, prognosis staging, and treatment methods for different types of MDS. It enabled the attending patients to have a further understanding of their disease and how their disease should be treated correctly. Then, Nurse Zhang Jing of MDS Center gave a detailed explanation on the nursing knowledge of MDS patients, diet and how to prevent tumor diseases. During the meeting, some MDS patients who recovered from treatment in the Department of Hematology of Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital introduced their medical history, told the detours they took in the process of medical treatment, and also shared their joy after being cured. Finally, experts from the MDS Center of Hematology Department of Henan Cancer Hospital answered various questions raised by patients and proposed to establish a WeChat group for patients with myelodysplastic syndrome in Henan Province, so that MDS patients can communicate with experts about their conditions at any time.
