Ear acupressure for common middle-aged and elderly insomnia

Insomnia is a common clinical condition. Mild cases often present with difficulty falling asleep and waking up easily during sleep, while severe cases often do not fall asleep throughout the night. Poor sleep quality and the consequent low functional status during the day are the main symptoms of insomnia and the target of clinical treatment. According to statistics, about 30% of the world’s population has difficulty sleeping, and the prevalence of chronic insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) is about 10%. Chronic insomnia not only affects the entire neuro-endocrine-immune network of the body, causing multiple organ dysfunction and decreased immune function, but also leads to complications such as depression and hypertension. In China, the prevalence of insomnia tends to increase with age, and the western drug Xuloxane (chemical name: eszopiclone) is preferred by middle-aged and elderly patients. Eszopiclam belongs to benzodiazepine anxiolytic, as a new type of anxiolytic, its sedative-hypnotic effect is more obvious, in clinical treatment is mainly used for the treatment of insomnia, and has a certain neurological control effect on anxiety, tension, fear and other diseases. The disadvantage is that there is drug dependence, long-term use will appear psychological dependence and somatic dependence. Withdrawal syndrome can be induced after stopping the drug, which can lead to a series of addiction symptoms such as general weakness, irritability, yawning, tasteless mouth, and even moodiness, chest tightness, anxiety, and dullness of sensation. TCM treatment for insomnia has many methods, good effects and few adverse reactions. Chinese medicine believes that insomnia is located in the heart, the heart is the master of the spirit, the heart is the master of blood, the heart is overworked, easy to lead to qi and blood depletion, the heart is not nourished, the mind is restless, resulting in insomnia. Ear acupuncture is an important part of Chinese medicine, and the ear is closely related to the physiopathology of the internal organs. Clinical studies have found that stimulating the Shen Men point can significantly increase the blood flow velocity of the left and right vertebral arteries and the basilar artery, and thus the pressure can improve the blood supply to the brain to reduce symptoms such as dizziness and headache, forgetfulness and dreaminess. The occipital point has a sedative and tranquilizing effect, and Shen Men is the right point, together to strengthen the role of sedation and tranquilization. Ear point subcortical, can regulate cortical excitation and inhibition, is the key point to calm the heart and tranquilize the mind. Ancestral medicine believes that the heart is the master of the mind, the heart point can tranquilize the mind, harmonize the qi and blood, clear the heart fire, so it can treat insomnia, dreaminess, forgetfulness and other diseases. By stimulating the acupuncture points on the auricle, it acts on the meridians and related internal organs of the whole body, so that the meridians are harmonized, the qi and blood are unimpeded, and the functions of the internal organs are coordinated, and the insomnia is removed. Combined with the characteristics of the pathology of middle-aged and elderly insomnia patients, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine will use Chinese medicine preparations with traditional auricular pressure therapy to treat this disease. The choice of internal medicine avoids the complexity of many flavors and heavy dosage used in some Chinese medicine water decoction, but also facilitates patients to accept the medication, and facilitates the observation of safety and tolerability during the treatment. Combination therapy can not only reduce the pain of insomnia of patients, but also increase the time of sleep, improve the time of falling asleep, increase the efficiency of sleep and improve the quality of life. Our department will continue to use the advantages of Chinese medicine to treat common chronic diseases of the elderly, to fundamentally harmonize yin and yang, so that the body can achieve “yin and yang secrecy”, restore normal physiological functions, so that the disease can be improved or even cured.
