Be careful with ear piercing

Recently, three cases of scarring hyperplasia of the earlobe or auricle caused by ear piercing were admitted to our department, all of them were girls around 20 years old and were treated surgically with post-operative radiotherapy. Wearing earrings has become an indispensable fashion for women today, and therefore more and more people are going to hospitals, beauty salons or stalls to have their ears pierced. The vast majority of people make their feminine style perfect by getting their ears pierced and wearing earrings. However, there are occasionally people who have hard lumps growing out of their pierced ears, which grow larger and larger, making it impossible to wear earrings; in serious cases, the earlobe or auricle is stretched and painful, and the appearance is unsightly, causing great damage to the body and mind. In medical science, this kind of swelling is called “keloid”, which is a special type of scar. A keloid is a benign disease in which the skin is traumatized, fibroblast activity is abnormally high, and a large amount of connective tissue proliferates and becomes transparently degenerated, resulting in excessive scar growth beyond the original damage. Keloid scars are recognized as a benign tumor confined to the dermis. There are multiple reasons for keloid scarring. First, it is related to the person’s keloid body. Such people are prone to develop visible keloid scars on the chest, neck, upper arms, etc. Secondly, it is related to the surgical operation. If the operation is not sterilized strictly, bacteria or foreign bodies are brought into the wound, and the wound is repeatedly infected and does not heal, keloid scars are easily produced. Thirdly, medical research shows that: the nickel needle used for ear piercing or certain metal earrings themselves can produce contact dermatitis in case of epidermal damage to the ear hole, prompting keloid scarring. If a keloid grows after ear piercing, you should go to the hospital as early as possible and the doctor will choose the treatment according to the specific situation: in mild cases, certain hormonal drugs can be injected into the scar to inhibit its continued growth, while in severe cases, complete removal by surgery, post-operative hormone injection or radiation therapy are feasible to prevent its recurrence to the maximum extent. For ear piercing, you should go to a hospital or a regular beauty salon, and try not to get your ears pierced at a stall or a shopping mall. Because ear piercing requires surgical instruments to be strictly sterilized and aseptic operation should be performed to ensure that infection from bacteria, hepatitis B and other infectious diseases can be avoided.
