When a patient has an upper respiratory tract infection, this includes inflammation of the nose and throat. It is possible to induce the spread of inflammation when the body is immunocompromised causing the palate such as the soft palate and palatal lobe area to feel pain in the palate due to muscle pulling when swallowing saliva. Swelling and pain in the palate is a persistent symptom, and in addition to the painful symptoms, the patient will also have a more pronounced tissue oedema. This oedema lasts for a long period of time and does not appear during brief swallows of saliva, but disappears after swallowing. However, pain may be induced in the palate due to contraction of the throat muscles during swallowing.
