How long can you live with heart disease?

The type of heart disease is complex and the specific survival time varies from person to person; milder conditions do not affect life expectancy. In contrast, severe myocardial infarction and arrhythmias may result in sudden cardiac death in a short period of time. In the case of some patients with early congenital heart disease, heart valve disease and atrial arrhythmias, the long-term survival rate is the same as normal by actively correcting structural heart abnormalities or performing radiofrequency ablation. Patients with severe congenital valve disease, however, may die prematurely in adolescence if they cannot receive timely surgical treatment. With dilated cardiomyopathy, the prognosis is poor, with a 5-year survival rate of roughly 50% and a 10-year survival rate of usually less than 25%. If patients develop acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, or pulmonary embolism, the immediate and long-term mortality rates are high. Therefore, cardiac patients should promptly visit a cardiovascular medicine department for examination and appropriate treatment after evaluation by a professional physician.
