The 5th metatarsal fracture can be immobilized in a cast if the displacement is not significant. Generally, the duration of cast immobilization is about 4-6 weeks, and the cast can be removed in 4-6 weeks. It is generally recommended to go to the hospital for an x-ray to confirm the location and healing of the fracture before removing the cast. After removal of the cast, partial weight bearing is possible and it is recommended to land with the protection of crutches. In addition, functional exercises of the ankle joint and all joints of the foot can be performed. It usually takes about 3-4 months to fully recover. Repeated swelling of the foot during exercise is normal.
