Can breast cancer patients take antidepressants?

Antidepressants may reduce the effectiveness of endocrine therapy drugs, with the main effect focused on tamoxifen (TMF). It has been suggested that the use of tamoxifen in breast cancer patients with certain antidepressants may lead to an increased recurrence rate of breast cancer. For example, fluoxetine (fluoxetine), when used concomitantly, can significantly reduce the concentration of tamoxifen in the blood, thus affecting the effectiveness of endocrine therapy.

But not all antidepressants reduce the efficacy of tamoxifen

Some antidepressants may reduce the therapeutic effect of tamoxifen, but not all. In general, patients taking tamoxifen should avoid tricyclic antidepressants, paroxetine (Paroxetine), fluoxetine, etc.

Of course, for breast cancer patients, antidepressant therapy takes into account interactions with other breast cancer treatment drugs in addition to their interactions with endocrine therapy drugs. When taking antidepressants, you should first talk to your doctor to confirm which antidepressant is most appropriate.
