As International Epilepsy Day approaches, how can people with epilepsy have a good Chinese New Year?

If seizures occur during this auspicious holiday, not only will the patient suffer from the discomfort caused by the disease, but it will also affect the mood of the holiday, and may even cause friends and relatives to look at the patient differently. The first thing you need to do is to get a good idea of what you’re doing. It is well known that staying up late, strong sound and light stimulation, fatigue, oxygen-deprived environment, and overeating are all triggers for seizures, and these factors come together to makes it seem like a crisis for epilepsy patients to spend the Chinese New Year safely. So, how do people with epilepsy spend the Spring Festival? First, you should pay attention to your environment. Avoid cold or hot environments and lack of ventilation (especially in air-conditioned rooms); avoid crowded and noisy places (such as temple fairs, KTV, etc.); avoid the sound and smell of fireworks. Second, attention should be paid to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Ensure regular rest and adequate sleep, avoid smoking, alcoholism, drinking excitatory drinks (coffee, strong tea, etc.), fatigue, staying up late, overeating, uneven satiety and hunger. Third, avoid being too emotional. During the holidays, relatives and friends get together, lively, playing cards and mahjong and other entertainment activities, should pay attention to avoid playing cards and mahjong for a long time, avoid prolonged use of computers, cell phones, play video games, should not watch easy to excite, sad and stimulating film and television programs. Fourth, should pay attention to safety, to prevent accidents. During the holiday season, you should pay attention to traffic safety, avoid head trauma, and avoid cold and flu leading to systemic inflammation and fever convulsions. When you go out, you should carry antiepileptic drugs with you to avoid missing or stopping medication. Fifth, attention should be paid to a reasonable diet (Chinese people like “food supplement” and “food therapy”, diet is the most concerned part of the people, so here to focus on). The main reason for this is to have a light and nutritious diet, with a variety of foods, meat and vegetables, and more laxative foods (such as honey, walnuts, almonds, spinach, etc.), and to avoid spicy stimuli and fatty fries. The actual fact is that you’ll be able to get a lot more than just a few of these. The actual fact is that the actual people with epilepsy should eat what? The actual fact is that you can find a lot of people who are not able to get a good deal on this. The caloric energy and protein needed by epileptic patients are the same as normal people, so eat more eggs, lean meat, milk, soy products and other foods containing high quality protein, while carbohydrates do not need too much, to not more than 300 grams per day is appropriate; appropriate to increase the supply of fat, should account for about 60% of the total calories; prohibit the consumption of food containing more sugar and stimulating food. 2. Water and salt intake should be limited. Excessive water consumption is also a triggering factor for epilepsy, so water consumption should not exceed 1000 ml per day; if the human body consumes too much salt in a short period of time, sodium ions can lead to excessive neuronal discharge; and induce disease seizures, so sodium salt should not exceed 3 grams per day. Therefore, epilepsy patients should try to eat less cola, juice, watermelon, salty vegetables, etc. 3, adequate supply of vitamins and minerals helpful to patients, such as magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium and other elements. The patients with epilepsy often lack magnesium and calcium, calcium can inhibit the abnormal excitement of the brain nerves, so that they remain in a state of stopping, which is conducive to disease treatment. Long-term drug therapy patients, such as long-term use of phenytoin sodium, prone to osteoporosis, in addition to giving a high calcium diet, should pay attention to the intake of magnesium. Adult body contains 20 to 25 grams of magnesium, about half of the set in the bone, the magnesium in the bone can not supply the body cells to use, adult men need 350 mg per day to maintain magnesium balance. Magnesium deficiency in addition to affect the bone osteogenesis, but also can lead to muscle tremors, mental tension. And if the blood is alkaline, it is not good for the breakdown of calcium compounds, thus lowering blood calcium and increasing nerve excitability, which can cause seizures. So epilepsy patients should eat less alkaline food, such as certain vegetables (amaranth, ashwagandha, etc.) and edible alkali, etc. a, magnesium-rich foods: millet, whole wheat flour, figs, corn, red beans, soybeans, dried tofu, celery, beef liver, chicken, fish, nuts, etc. b, zinc-rich foods: meat, livestock offal, malt, nuts, crab, oysters and lentils. c.Foods rich in calcium: milk, dairy products, sesame paste, bone broth, shrimp skin, ribs, crispy fish beans and soy products, etc. 4, there is evidence that congenital epilepsy may be related to the lack of manganese in the mother’s diet during pregnancy. More manganese rich foods should be eaten: rice, whole wheat bread, malt, buckwheat, lima beans, nuts, mai xian wong, sardines, blackberries, figs and pineapples. 5. Potassium intake should be limited. Epilepsy patients mostly take sedative drugs for a long time, prone to anemia, leukopenia, electrolyte metabolism disorders (hyperkalemia mainly), malnutrition, etc.. When the diet contains too much potassium, it will increase the patient’s blood potassium level, so the potassium intake of epilepsy patients should not exceed 3 grams per day. Foods containing low potassium salts such as: rape hearts, baby carrots, white radish, rape hearts, celery, pumpkin, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumber, winter melon, loofah, zucchini, duck pear, apple, grapes, pineapple, etc., can be eaten more; while foods containing high potassium such as: bananas, mushrooms, etc., should be eaten less. 6, to increase the intake of vitamin B, C, E. B vitamins can help protein metabolism, promote brain cell excitation inhibitory mechanism to better function; vitamin C deficiency, easy to make the structure of brain cells relaxation or tension. Vitamin E has an antioxidant effect and can scavenge toxic free radicals in the body; it is also a membrane stabilizer that can prevent increased permeability of brain cells and play a role in preventing convulsive seizures. Foods rich in vitamins: carrots, sesame oil, peanut oil, eggs, bean sprouts, seaweed, shellfish, etc. I hope this article can help you all to have a happy and peaceful year, and Dr. Kobayashi would like to wish you a good morning! We wish you all the best for the year of the monkey!
