Prof. Wang Lei’s Team Successfully Removes 20cm Giant Mass for Octogenarian Man

At the age of 81, huge malignant tumor, multiple organ invasion, recurrent fever, multiple underlying diseases, postoperative pharyngeal cancer and other unfavorable factors of the surgery, the colorectal surgery department of our hospital combined with multidisciplinary departments to overcome them one by one, and performed left retroperitoneal resection of a huge mass on the 81 year old Tan Bo, removing a mass of 20 centimeters. Now, Mr. Tan has fully recovered without any complications from the surgery. Wang Lei, Department of Gastroenterology and Anorectal Surgery, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University Before being hospitalized, Uncle Tan’s temperature was close to 39℃ at the highest, and he had been suffering from recurrent fevers and poor appetite for 4 weeks, and could only eat a small amount of semi-fluid food, and he would also have nausea and vomiting. Less than a month after the symptoms appeared, Tanbo lost 5 pounds. Anxious family members took Tan Bo to the local hospital for an examination, found that the left retroperitoneum has a huge mass, due to Tan Bo’s advanced age, and has a variety of underlying diseases, but also had throat cancer surgery, the doctor did not dare to hastily perform surgical treatment. After making inquiries, he finally came to our hospital for treatment. After being admitted to the hospital, he was found to have a huge malignant tumor in the left retroperitoneum (with a length of nearly 20 centimeters) through abdominal MR examination, and the mass had invaded the left kidney and part of the left psoas major muscle. Together with recurrent fever and poor appetite, there was no significant improvement after preliminary treatment. The colorectal surgery department combined with the anesthesiology department, ICU, internal medicine, urology, and otorhinolaryngology to conduct a multidisciplinary consultation. After carefully reviewing Tambor’s medical history and asking detailed questions about his condition, the expert group unanimously agreed that Tambor’s surgical fundamentals were extremely poor, surgical resection was extremely difficult, and anesthesia risk was extremely high due to his family’s strong surgical hospital. After detailed pre-operative evaluation and preparation, a detailed surgical plan was specially formulated for Tambor. The surgery was carried out smoothly with sufficient preoperative preparation. During the surgery, a huge left retroperitoneal mass was found, which was deep to the plane of the psoas major muscle and adhered to the lower pole of the left kidney. After separating the mass from the surrounding tissues, the mass was successfully resected, and the left kidney and the left ureter were preserved. The operation lasted 4 hours and resulted in more than 1,000 milliliters of bleeding. After active treatment, the operation was still completed smoothly, and the postoperative incision was 20 centimeters long. After the surgery, Tambor’s health condition has been relatively stable. Gastrointestinal function recovered quickly two days after the surgery, and he was able to get out of bed and eat a liquid diet. The amount of fluid draining from the retroperitoneum was not much, and the drainage tube was successfully removed four days later, and his kidney function was completely normal, which achieved the expected effect of the surgery. Recently, Tan Bo’s appetite and spirit improved significantly, and because he could not make a sound during the laryngeal cancer surgery, he entrusted his family members to express their gratitude to the medical team led by Prof. Wang Lei, calling them “the best medical team I have ever seen”.
