What to do about stiffness after ankle fracture surgery

When postoperative stiffness of the ankle fracture occurs, consider that the patient was injured with more severe soft tissue damage or even with complications of dislocation. If the patient’s preoperative complications are more serious, first of all, active and passive activities should be actively performed in the early stage, and functional exercises should be performed. If the exercise cannot be relieved and the degree of stiffness is more obvious, surgical treatment can be taken, such as minimally invasive release of the more serious parts of the adhesions. If the adhesions are mild and no surgical treatment is needed, intravenous anesthesia can be applied to keep the patient in a pain-free state, and passive flexion and extension can be performed to release the adhesions, which can usually achieve the appropriate results. If the symptoms are severe, surgical release is required.
