How to manage the diet of tumor patients?

Due to the rapid progress of chemotherapy for tumors, almost every tumor involves chemotherapy, and some tumors can be cured by chemotherapy, so the status of chemotherapy is increasing. However, chemotherapy is, after all, a less selective tumor treatment, which kills tumor cells while harming normal human cells, especially fast-growing tissues such as bone marrow cells, mucosal tissues of the digestive tract, and hair. The common reactions of patients during tumor chemotherapy are: loss of appetite, poor appetite, malignancy, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, ulceration or pain in oral mucosa, change of taste or smell, weight loss, fatigue, and decrease of white blood cells in blood picture. Poor management can affect the patient’s treatment and recovery. Therefore, it is recommended that patients should not fast before each chemotherapy treatment. Because some patients are afraid to eat due to the fear of nausea and vomiting caused by tumor chemotherapy. Before chemotherapy, you can eat some light food, such as thin rice, noodles, cookies, milk, eggs, etc.; do not eat or less eat greasy, easy to produce gas and indigestible food, such as big meat and oil food, fried food, etc. 2, chemotherapy to maintain a balanced diet. A balanced diet means: including sufficient carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins diet, but the amount of fat in food should be reduced, which is due to the damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa caused by chemotherapy will affect the digestion and absorption of fat, in addition to increasing the adverse reactions of the digestive tract. Chemotherapy must ensure that patients have sufficient protein intake, such as milk, meat, eggs, etc. 3, chemotherapy interval in addition to maintain a balanced diet, but also pay attention to the diversity of food, but must pay attention to the cleanliness of food. Since patients may experience various digestive reactions during the interval of chemotherapy, they need to adopt different diets. However, one thing is basically certain and that is the decrease of white blood cells. At this time, the patient’s ability to fight infection is reduced, so the cleanliness of food is especially important, and raw and cold food should be avoided. Before, during and after chemotherapy, many patients or their family members may think that certain foods are hairy and not give them to the patients, but in fact, the so-called hairy foods are used in Chinese medicine for some infectious diseases such as bacterial infections, and the infection will be aggravated by eating certain foods. But for tumor patients, most of these foods are redundant, especially during chemotherapy, without adequate nutrition, patients’ body recovery will be affected, and then the tumor treatment will be affected. Therefore, it is suggested that patients do not need to emphasize too much on the so-called dietary taboos during the whole period of tumor treatment, but to maintain a balanced diet to complete chemotherapy successfully. In the process of chemotherapy, dietary care during the period of special symptoms: 1. Loss of appetite: this is a common side effect of chemotherapy drugs, when it occurs in chemotherapy, you can try a small amount of multi-meal diet, if necessary, you can eat once in about 2 hours; rinse your mouth with light salt water before eating to keep your mouth moist and enhance your sense of taste; add a little bit of your favorite condiments in food; you can also pack some high-protein, high-calorie foods around you such as candy, chocolate, etc. If the above measures are not effective, consider using drugs to improve the patient’s appetite, such as progesterone drugs, and if necessary, also use parenteral nutrition. 2.Change in taste or smell: Some patients experience a change in taste or smell after the use of chemotherapy drugs. At this time, you can try to eat some foods and drinks that you have not eaten or do not eat often; rinse your mouth and brush your teeth often to keep your mouth clean and clean your taste buds; add some acid to your food, such as vinegar, lemon, orange, etc. Do not add if you have mouth ulcers because it will cause mouth pain; also add some seasonings to your food; eat fresh vegetables and fruits. 3, constipation: chemotherapy drugs and anti-vomiting drugs, the use of analgesics can cause constipation in patients, the clinical very common. Patients with constipation are advised to: drink more water and exercise more (appropriate and within their ability); eat high-fiber foods that stimulate intestinal movement such as vegetables, fruits and cereals; take honey and sesame oil by mouth; eat and go to the toilet regularly. However, there are still some patients whose constipation cannot be relieved, and it is time to take the help of doctors, such as oral laxatives, enemas and other treatments. 4, diarrhea: diarrhea during chemotherapy or intermittent period is a symptom that should be highly valued by patients. In serious cases, it is necessary for the doctor to deal with it in time. If the patient has diarrhea at home, it is recommended to ask the doctor to take a look to avoid serious complications. If diarrhea is combined with leukopenia, fever, electrolyte disorders, etc., one of them needs to be hospitalized. If the patient has a small number of diarrhea, no abnormal stool tests and normal blood picture, dietary adjustments can be made: drink more water; avoid high-fiber foods and high-fat foods; avoid stimulating foods; avoid gas-producing foods and beverages; and take oral safranin to prevent intestinal infections. 5. Painful ulcers in mouth and throat: During chemotherapy of tumor, due to the influence of chemotherapy drugs, some patients will have ulcers and pain in mouth and throat, which will affect the diet of patients. If ulcers and pain occur, it is recommended to eat soft food without irritation, and warm and cool food is appropriate; avoid eating food that stimulates the mouth; gargle with soda and salt water alternately several times a day to prevent infection, reduce pain and promote healing of ulcers; if ulcers are serious, give topical use of stannum; also use granulocyte colony-stimulating factor gargle, gargle slowly after swallowing, which is helpful for healing of ulcers. It can also be used to spray the oral cavity several times a day to promote the growth of oral mucosa, so that the ulcer can be repaired as soon as possible. If the mouth ulcer is too severe to eat, extra-gastrointestinal nutrition is needed, such as an IV. Those with combined oral infection also need anti-infection treatment. 6. Nausea and vomiting: Nausea and vomiting often occur during chemotherapy for tumor patients, and its severity is related to the drugs used and the patient’s own condition. Therefore, patients must be prepared for vomiting before chemotherapy, at the same time, do not fast before chemotherapy, but do not eat too much either. When nausea and vomiting occur, it is important to replenish water to avoid dehydration, and it is appropriate to replenish water in small amounts several times. Once the vomiting stops, you should eat. Some of our patients have a strong will, and they fight vomiting by eating constantly. There are some patients who are afraid to eat because of the fear of vomiting and the result is not good for the recovery of the gastrointestinal tract function. We should use a light diet (bread, rice buns, milk powder, vegetable and fruit juices, etc.), avoid greasy food, eat in small portions and sit down for a while after meals instead of lying down immediately. If vomiting is severe, you need to ask your doctor to handle it. 7. Leukopenia: Chemotherapy patients often experience a decrease in white blood cells, which is due to the suppression of bone marrow function caused by chemotherapy drugs, and the production of white blood cells in the bone marrow is inhibited by the drugs. Clinically, leukopenia is classified into 5 levels. The greatest danger of leukopenia is that the patient’s immunity is reduced and he or she is susceptible to infection. When a patient has leukopenia of grade III or higher, the patient should pay special attention to his or her diet. What to pay attention to? It is important to pay attention to the cleanliness of the food, otherwise there is a risk of serious consequences. The food chosen should be high in protein (chicken, fish, meat, eggs, milk, etc.), food made of rice and flour, fruits and vegetables. Avoid bacterial contamination during food processing, try to eat cooked food, do not store food in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours, and heat sterilization when you need to eat, such as boiling or heating in the microwave oven. Wash your hands before using meals. Severe leukopenia is a condition that requires hospitalization. Chemotherapy for tumor is a very serious matter. Some patients and family members, and even some doctors have not been aware of the seriousness of chemotherapy, thinking that it is just a drip and a shot, which can be done anywhere. In fact, this is a great misunderstanding. Chemotherapy for tumor is an invisible scalpel that kills without seeing blood when used improperly, but brings benefits to tumor patients when used well. In fact, this is a great misunderstanding.
