What are the treatments for facial muscle spasm and how does the surgery work?

The common treatment methods for facial muscle spasm are medication, botulinum toxin injection, and microvascular decompression surgery. Drug treatment is preferred to carbamazepine, which is suitable for early patients with mild symptoms. If the drug is not effective or has high side effects, microvascular decompression surgery can be considered. Most of the reports in the current literature show that the efficiency of microvascular decompression surgery is around 95%, which is effective, low risk and less traumatic, and is the recommended treatment of choice for most patients. If patients are afraid of surgery or physically unsuitable for surgery, local injections of botulinum toxin type A can be used to relieve facial muscle throbbing. However, both medication and botulinum toxin injections have limitations, and the treatment effect gradually decreases as the duration of the disease increases.
