Chinese medicine has a long history of treating infertility, as it was recorded in the I Ching in the 11th century BC. Later generations of physicians have continuously developed and improved the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, and gradually formed a treatment method with Chinese medicine characteristics and advantages. Today, with the rapid development of assisted reproduction technology in Western medicine, Chinese medicine treatment has shown obvious advantages in dealing with the bottlenecks of ovarian hyporesponsiveness, obstruction of follicle fertilization, ovarian hyperstimulation and high miscarriage rate. For ovulation disorder infertility, pure Chinese medicine or Chinese and Western medicine combined with artificial cycle and acupuncture to promote ovulation can adjust menstrual cycle, promote ovulation, improve endometrial tolerance and enhance luteal function. The combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine can limit the side effects of applying western medicine alone and reduce the incidence of unruptured follicle luteinization syndrome, ovarian hyperstimulation and multiple pregnancies. For tubal and pelvic inflammatory infertility, the comprehensive therapy of oral + external application + enema + physiotherapy with Chinese medicine can improve the immunity of the body, release the adhesions of pelvic tissues, promote the absorption of inflammation, and help restore the anatomy and function of the fallopian tubes. For immune infertility, Chinese medicine has a two-way regulatory effect, which can improve the body’s immune function and inhibit harmful hypersensitivity and autoimmune reactions, which is not easy to produce drug resistance and has a low recurrence rate after discontinuation of drugs. For habitual miscarriage, Chinese medicine advocates “pre-pregulation”, i.e. pre-conception regulation and post-conception fetus stabilization, combining prevention and treatment, with higher success rate of fetus preservation and no toxic side effects. Other advantageous treatments, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, reduced ovarian reserve function and in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer technology, have greatly improved the conception rate of these diseases.
