Clinical treatment of congenital heart disease in adults

Adults with congenital heart disease mainly have atrial septal defects, which are asymptomatic in infancy and only gradually appear even after the age of 20, mainly due to shortness of breath and significant loss of strength after activity. It is usually treated surgically, and the best period of surgery is from 2 to 6 years old, all are minimally invasive surgery for repair. Before surgery, it is necessary to have a low salt and low fat diet, do not stay up late, ensure smooth bowel movements, use light laxative drugs if constipation is present, and prohibit abdominal exertion, otherwise it will increase the burden on the heart. In adults, if the atrial septal defect is less than 5mm and there is no enlargement of the atrium, you can also temporarily not do the surgery and keep observing the condition, usually pay attention not to fatigue and do not do strenuous activities. Congenital heart disease cannot be treated with medication, and surgical repair is the only measure.
