A herniated lumbar disc can cause numbness in the lower extremities. when a lumbar disc herniates, the nucleus pulposus breaks through the posterior longitudinal ligament and presses on the nerve roots, there will be radioactive numbness and discomfort in one or even both lower extremities. a CT or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination can help to understand the nature, location, and severity of the lesion.
In the early stage, conservative treatment (medication, physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises) can be used to relieve symptoms, while in the later stage, severe lumbar disc herniation requires surgery.
