When a lumbar disc herniates, the nucleus pulposus breaks through the posterior longitudinal ligament and compresses the nerve roots, resulting in radiated numbness and discomfort in one or even both lower extremities.
Early stage can be treated conservatively (medication, physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises) to relieve symptoms, while later severe lumbar disc herniation requires surgery.
