WHO has not yet issued a statement that China is an “infected country”. According to the International Health Regulations (2005), PHEIC is defined as: posing a public health risk to other countries through intercountry transmission of the disease; and potentially requiring a coordinated nationality response. The definition implies the following: “serious, unusual or unexpected; has public health implications beyond the national borders of the affected country; and may require immediate international action.” World Health Organization Director-General Desmond Tan stressed that there is no need for measures to restrict international travel and trade and is confident that the outbreak in China can be contained. In the long term, the epidemic will not set China’s economy back, and many countries in international trade need China as a large market.
