What’s it like to be a vegetable?

Vegetative people, i.e., the vegetative state, patients may have certain instinctive responses to certain stimuli, but the functions of thought and emotion have been completely lost.
Vegetative people are mainly affected by trauma or other factors, so that the cerebral cortex is severely damaged, retaining the brain stem function, although the patient exists vital signs, while certain physiological responses, reflexes to certain stimuli exist.
For example, if you zap the patient’s body, there will be a natural unconscious leg flexion, and there may be voluntary swallowing movements. However, thoughts, emotions, will and other reactions are completely lost, as if the patient is in a vegetative state.
Patients in a vegetative state can survive for a long time if they are properly cared for and have fewer complications. Some patients may even regain consciousness if they adhere to treatment, rehabilitation, and communication.
For patients in a vegetative state, rehabilitation and nursing care should be provided under the guidance of a doctor in order to maximize the possibility of recovery.
