When is a good time to treat amblyopia in children

The number of children with amblyopia is increasing, and it is common to see children in kindergartens and elementary schools wearing frames to treat their amblyopic eyes. There are many factors that can cause amblyopia in children, such as strabismus, high myopia, hyperopia, congenital cataracts, ptosis, etc. All of these can cause poor vision development and amblyopia in children. How is amblyopia determined? Children with amblyopia have vision that is not at the normal level of vision for children of the same age, even after wearing appropriate glasses. In general, children under the age of 3 with corrected visual acuity below 0.5, children between the ages of 4 and 5 with corrected visual acuity below 0.6, and children between the ages of 6 and 7 with corrected visual acuity below 0.7 should undergo amblyopia treatment and vision training. If treatment is timely, most children’s vision can be restored to normal, and stereopsis may also be restored. The age of 12 is the watershed for amblyopia treatment The preschool age is the ideal age for amblyopia treatment, but after the age of 12, the hope for amblyopia cure becomes very slim. Therefore, parents should take their children to a regular hospital ophthalmology examination before school age to detect amblyopia and treat it in time so as not to miss the best treatment opportunity. There are several ways to treat amblyopia: 1. Wearing corrective glasses: Most children with amblyopia are farsighted, myopic or astigmatic. Wearing corrective glasses is an important treatment method. 2. Masking therapy: Some amblyopes have unequal or widely differing visual acuity in both eyes, and in this case, masking therapy is needed. Strictly and continuously cover the eye with good vision to “exercise” the amblyopic eye, so that the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye increases until the visual acuity of the two eyes is equal or reaches the normal level. 3.Auxiliary therapy: fine training, bead-piercing, drawing, amblyopia trainer, etc. ”Amblyopia treatment, it is important to persist” Amblyopia is different from myopia, wearing corrective glasses, vision will not immediately improve to the normal level. During daily clinic sessions, some children also say that there is no difference between wearing glasses and not wearing them. In this case, it is very important to “keep wearing the glasses” and parents should encourage and supervise their children to not interrupt the treatment process in order to achieve the desired results. The process of amblyopia treatment is actually a process of vision development, and it takes a long time to recover from amblyopic eyes to normal vision, weeks or months in mild cases, and a year or several years in severe cases. In the case of children with amblyopia, they often take off the masking piece because the amblyopic eye cannot see clearly for a while, and use the “good eye” to peek, which will lead to inadequate masking, the amblyopic eye does not get sufficient exercise, losing the meaning of masking and missing the best time for treatment. Therefore, the key to amblyopia treatment is to insist on wearing the lenses, prevent peeking from the covered eye when covering, and have regular eye clinic follow-ups.
