Science: What is diabetic retinopathy

How can diabetes affect vision? This is the first reaction of many people facing this problem. In fact, the reason is very simple: a diabetic patient is similar to a person immersed in a high concentration of sugar water, almost every part of the person’s body will be affected by “high blood sugar”, and the microvasculature in the retina is not spared! Under the influence of hyperglycemia, the retinal microvasculature will gradually develop lesions, local tissue ischemia and hypoxia, which will lead to neovascularization and exudation, vitreous accumulation of blood and retinal tractional detachment, and in some patients, even eye atrophy and blindness. In addition, some patients will also develop neovascular glaucoma, which will eventually lead to blindness due to uncontrolled intraocular pressure. The entire disease process described above – we call it “diabetic retinopathy”!
