Diabetic retinopathy is a preventable, manageable and avoidable disease, and early diagnosis and effective treatment are essential to slowing the progression of the disease and reducing vision loss.
Regular follow-up of patients and treatment with necessary and appropriate retinal photocoagulation and vitreous surgery can prevent severe vision loss in the majority of patients. However, irreversible blindness can occur in patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy that severely impairs vision.
