90-year-old woman undergoes knee replacement

Recently, 90-year-old Mrs. Wang Xiuying successfully completed her right artificial knee joint replacement surgery at the Department of Bone and Joint of Gulou Hospital. At present, she is recovering well and is able to walk on the ground and is receiving further rehabilitation guidance. Mrs. Wang developed pain in her right knee five years ago and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at that time. She was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at that time. After several conservative treatments, the results were sometimes good and sometimes bad. In recent years, as she grew older, her knee pain gradually increased and her activities were severely restricted, so she could not take care of herself. After detailed examination, it was found that the right knee joint had degenerated. After a detailed evaluation, only an artificial knee joint replacement could be performed. However, she was 90 years old and her body functions were not as good as a young person’s. Both the surgery itself and the post-operative rehabilitation were very difficult. However, if the surgery was abandoned, the old man would have to be bedridden for a long time and the quality of life in his later years would be greatly reduced. After detailed evaluation by various specialties and repeated communication with the patient’s family, the final decision was made to perform a total knee replacement, and on August 27, the old man was wheeled into the operating room. The joint replacement was successfully performed in just one hour, and on the third day after the surgery, the old man was already moving on the ground under the guidance of the rehabilitation physician. Dr. Xu Zhihong, deputy chief physician, said that artificial knee replacement has been successfully carried out in Gulou Hospital for about 15 years, and currently about 600 patients are treated with this surgery each year. Artificial knee replacement is mainly used for patients with severe joint pain, joint instability and deformity caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis of the knee joint, etc. Since the surgery can significantly relieve knee pain, correct deformity and improve joint function, thus restoring pain-free activities, the surgical results are exact. Since the prosthesis of artificial knee replacement has a certain probability of loosening in the long term (about 10% in 15 years), the best age for surgery was generally recommended in the past to be 65-75 years. However, in recent years, there is a trend of increasing the age of patients undergoing surgery, because many patients miss the opportunity at the prime age of surgery due to fear of surgery, and the condition of such patients almost always worsens, resulting in the final inability to walk, severe pain and affect sleep, which seriously affects the quality of life. Dr. Xu also said that knee replacement surgery is now very mature, so it is hoped that patients who need knee replacement should undergo surgery as soon as possible so that they can not only ensure their quality of life, but also try to avoid having surgery after the age of 80.
