Is a large fatty liver serious?

Liver enlargement fatty liver severity cannot be generalized, because both mild and severe fatty liver may have different degrees of liver enlargement, and the severity depends on the degree of fat infiltration in the liver. Fatty liver is mostly associated with alcohol, obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, etc. The severity of fatty liver is graded according to the degree of fat infiltration in the liver. If the fat content in the liver reaches about 5% of the actual weight of the liver or more than 1/3 of the liver cells in the liver lobules undergo steatosis, it can be called mild fatty liver; between 10% and 25% or more than 2/3 of the liver cells in the liver lobules undergo steatosis for moderate fatty liver; between 25% and 50% or almost all of the liver cells in the lobules undergo steatosis, it is called severe fatty liver. Patients with fatty liver who have hepatomegaly should undergo ultrasound and CT examinations to determine the extent of fatty liver lesions based on the liver/spleen density ratio.
