In today’s society, the rate of infertility is increasing year after year, which seriously affects the relationship between husband and wife and family harmony. There are many causes of infertility, including ovulation disorders (e.g. polycystic ovary syndrome), tubal occlusion, endometriosis, cervical inflammation and some metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hyperthyroidism, etc.). Modern medicine adopts appropriate treatment methods according to different causes, such as ovulation promotion, tubal infusion, medication or surgery for endometriosis, etc. From the traditional medical point of view, the three organs most closely related to reproductive physiology are the kidneys, spleen and liver: the kidneys store sperm and are responsible for reproductive development; the spleen is responsible for transportation and is the source of qi and blood biochemistry; the liver is responsible for draining, regulating qi and storing blood. In addition, the two channels of Chong Ren both originate from the uterus (womb), and the filling and regulation of Qi and blood are also important factors. The uterus is the soil for nurturing the fetus, which also requires moderate temperature, moderate humidity and dryness, balanced nutrition, and harmonization of Qi and Blood. Different treatment principles are determined according to the classification of the evidence. For those with deficiency cold in the spleen and kidneys, it is recommended to tonify the kidneys, strengthen the spleen and warm the uterus; for those with Qi stagnation and blood stasis, it is recommended to regulate the Qi and activate the Blood, and for those with Qi and Blood deficiency, it is recommended to strengthen the spleen and stomach, tonify the Qi and nourish the Blood; for those with phlegm and dampness, it is recommended to remove phlegm and dampness. Acupuncture is very effective in treating infertility, applying local (abdominal) acupuncture points to directly promote and stimulate the functions of the uterus and ovaries, and according to the identification of evidence with distal (extremity) acupuncture points to help the positive and dispel the evil simultaneously. Those with cold can be combined with moxibustion to dispel cold and warm the uterus, and those with stasis can be combined with acupuncture and cupping to remove stasis and create new energy. In addition, depending on the situation, electroacupuncture and auricular pressure can also be considered to enhance the therapeutic effect. Through acupuncture and moxibustion comprehensive therapy, both the symptoms and the root cause are regulated at the overall level to normalize menstruation, harmonize qi and blood, and create a good environment for conception, and also have a better therapeutic effect on obesity, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and other primary diseases. Generally, 2-3 times a week for 2-3 menstrual cycles can achieve satisfactory results.
