The most common pathogenic bacteria in neonatal umbiliculitis are Staphylococcus aureus, but also Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Staphylococcus aureus is resistant to many antibiotics and can lead to sepsis in severe infections; Escherichia coli can easily invade the bloodstream from the umbilical stump and can easily lead to sepsis. Therefore, neonatal umbilical infection should be treated with antibiotics as soon as possible, otherwise it may lead to sepsis, which can be life-threatening.
