What are the symptoms of belly button infection in newborns? How to prevent it?

The umbilical cord is the channel through which the fetus is supplied by the mother with fetal nutrition and fetal excretion of waste while in the mother’s body. After the birth of the fetus, the medical staff will ligate the umbilical cord and cut it off. After the umbilical cord is cut, the umbilical cord stump will gradually dry up and become thin and slowly turn black. The umbilical cord usually falls off 3-7 days after the baby is born. Before and after the umbilical cord is cut, if the disinfection process is not strict and the care is not proper, it is easy to cause bacterial contamination and inflammation of the umbilical cord. Common pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, followed by Streptococcus haemolyticus, or mixed bacterial infections, etc. Symptoms of umbilical cord infection in newborns: 1. Wounds do not heal after the umbilical cord falls off, and there is exudate or purulent discharge. 2. The skin around the umbilicus is red and swollen, deep and subcutaneous, and in severe cases it spreads to form cellulitis or periumbilical abscess, or even secondary peritonitis. 3. Fever and increased blood leukocyte count. 4. In chronic umbiliculitis, the umbilical granuloma is formed, which is a small cherry-red swelling protruding, often flowing mucous discharge, and does not heal over time. Treatment of neonatal umbilicitis: Pay attention to keeping the umbilical cord locally dry and prevent urine contamination. You can rinse the area with 3% hydrogen peroxide 2-3 times and then disinfect it with tincture of iodine, or use deiodized alcohol or gentian violet 2-3 times a day. In case of antibiotic treatment, it is generally very effective to use plus benzylpenicillin in the newborn period. For those who have formed abscesses, timely incision and drainage for drug exchange. Those who have formed chronic granulomas should be cauterized locally with 10% silver nitrate or silver nitrate rods, and those whose granules are not easily cauterized should be given surgery to remove them. Prevention of neonatal umbilicosis: popularize the new method of delivery, strictly enforce aseptic operation when cutting the umbilical cord, and provide good care after cutting the umbilical cord.
