What are the advantages of targeted therapy compared to chemotherapy?

  1. Targeted therapy can effectively prolong patients’ survival time If there is EGFR gene mutation, such advanced lung cancer patients using TKI (such as Exatinib hydrochloride), the efficacy is 2-3 times that of conventional chemotherapy. If receiving chemotherapy, patients usually experience tumor progression after 4 or 1 month; while receiving TKI targeted therapy, tumor progression usually occurs at 12 or 9 months, i.e. extending patients’ lives by 8 or 8 months. 2.Low toxic side effects of targeted therapy Because chemotherapy is often “enemy-me-not-distinguished”, it kills cancer cells and injures normal cells at the same time, which can be said as “injuring a thousand enemies and damaging eight hundred”. Therefore, chemotherapy often has many side effects, such as bone marrow suppression, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, neurotoxicity, liver and kidney function damage, etc. In addition to suffering from the disease itself, patients with advanced lung cancer often suffer from chemotherapy side effects, which are very unbearable. Targeted therapy only targets specific tumor cells, which is less harmful to normal cells and has fewer toxic side effects compared with chemotherapy. The most common adverse reactions are rash and diarrhea, which are mostly mild to moderate. 3.Targeted therapy helps to improve patients’ quality of life Patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer should not only pursue to live long but also live well, i.e. they need to live with quality. It was found that compared with placebo, patients with advanced lung cancer showed significant improvement in overall condition, somatic symptoms and emotion after using targeted therapy. In terms of overall condition, patients treated with targeted therapy had significantly better mental status. In particular, chemotherapy required hospitalization and infusion therapy. In contrast, targeted therapy only requires oral medication and regular review. In terms of physical symptoms, patients using targeted therapies can meet the needs of daily life and travel and vacation because of their better physical condition, and in addition, patients can tolerate the toxic side effects of targeted therapies because they are small and do not have to suffer too much from side effects. In terms of emotion, patients using targeted therapy are significantly less worried about their “possible death” than those using other treatments.
