According to Chinese medicine, the spleen is the master of muscles, the liver is the master of tendons, and the kidney is the master of bones, and the three are closely related to physical fatigue and mental exhaustion. Abnormalities in the functions of the liver, spleen and kidney can lead to the occurrence of chronic fatigue syndrome, with long-term extreme fatigue and weakness, mental exhaustion, reduced work efficiency, and mental and emotional symptoms such as pain, depression or irritability. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disease name recommended by the Centers for Disease Control in the United States. It is a clinical syndrome in which a healthy person experiences severe generalized lethargy for unknown reasons, accompanied by mental symptoms such as low fever, headache, muscle pain, depression, poor concentration, and sometimes swollen lymph nodes that interfere with normal life. Previous lack of awareness of this disease has misdiagnosed many such patients as neurasthenia. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control has developed a diagnostic criteria for this disease. (1) Main criteria: 2 of the following must be present: (1) Severe and debilitating fatigue of recent onset, lasting at least 6 months. (2) No medical or psychiatric disease causing fatigue, such as malignancy, autoimmune disease, infectious disease, neuromuscular disease, drug addiction, poisoning, etc., is found. (2) Secondary criteria: At least eight of the following symptoms are required: widespread headache, muscle pain, arthralgia, fever, sore throat, pain in the neck or axillary lymph nodes, muscle weakness, tiredness lasting more than 24 hours after light labor, psychoneurological symptoms (such as irritability, forgetfulness, inattention, difficulty in thinking, depression, etc.), sleep disturbance, sudden onset of fatigue, etc. (3) Objective criteria: at least 2 of the following symptoms and signs: hypothermia (oral temperature 37.6~38.0℃ or anal temperature 37.9~38.8℃); non-exudative pharyngitis, pain in the throat that lasts for a long time; mild enlargement of the lymph nodes in the neck or axilla with pressure pain. The etiology of chronic fatigue syndrome is not well understood. Initial studies by experts suggest that it is related to infection with the EBV virus. Since the disease often presents with low-grade fever, sore throat and enlarged lymph nodes, it is a different disease from neurasthenia.
