What is photomedicine treatment like at Shanghai Dermatology Hospital?

The Department of Photomedicine Therapy is a key discipline in our hospital, with a discipline team with rich clinical experience and strong scientific research strength, aiming at solving stubborn and intractable dermatological diseases, and constantly exploring new treatment means to improve clinical efficacy. Under the leadership of Prof. Wang Xiuli, who is the leader of the discipline, there are 8 physicians and 12 nurses in the discipline team, including 4 PhDs; 1 professor (doctoral supervisor) and 1 associate professor (master’s supervisor) each. The department has been awarded 4 projects of various talents training programs in Shanghai, and has undertaken 7 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 30 projects of Returned Overseas Scholarship Fund of Ministry of Personnel of China, 30 projects of Shanghai key scientific research projects, 10 projects of national continuing education programs, and more than 40 SCI papers; it has been awarded with 3 scientific and technological achievements of Shanghai, 2 scientific and technological advancement prizes of Shanghai, 2 Shanghai medical prizes, and 3 national patents. The Department of Photomedicine Therapy also has long-term and close academic cooperation and exchanges with the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University and the Laser Institute of the University of Munich, Germany, and constantly draws new theories and learns new technologies to advance to a higher level of discipline. In China, we were the first to create photodynamic therapy in dermatology and set up a photodynamic therapy group, and the first to publish original academic papers on photodynamic therapy for dermatological diseases, covering skin tumors, condyloma acuminatum, and severe acne, etc. At present, photodynamic therapy has become the first choice of treatment for condyloma acuminatum of the urethra, and the most important treatment for skin tumors on the surface of the body and severe acne. Our hospital is the head unit of “Photodynamic Therapy Research Center” of Chinese Medical Association Dermatology and Venereology Branch, and Prof. Wang Xiuli is the chief expert of photodynamic therapy. At present, the discipline is gradually focusing on the comprehensive treatment of photoaging and skin tumors, acne, scarring and other intractable skin diseases. 1.Photodynamic therapy: it is a treatment technology that selectively destroys lesion tissues through photodynamic reaction, which is a new therapy after traditional therapies such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunization. Due to its unique advantages of safety, high efficiency and good cosmetic effect, it has become one of the hottest fields of application at home and abroad. Currently, it is used in dermatology for photoaging and skin tumors, acne, condyloma acuminatum, and infectious skin diseases. 2.Phototherapy/308 excimer light: It is the most commonly used and popularized method for clinical treatment of skin diseases. Widely used in psoriasis (psoriasis), vitiligo, pityriasis rosea, pemphigus, intractable dermatitis/eczema, herpes zoster and its postherpetic neuralgia, erythema furfur, mycosis fungoides, and other skin diseases. Ultraviolet phototherapy is used as a first-line therapy in Europe, America and China for the treatment of psoriasis, and 308nm is considered to be the best wavelength for vitiligo treatment. 3, CO2 laser/ultra-pulse CO2 laser: can be fine treatment of various benign skin proliferations (such as age spots, warts), our laser room set up decades, the number of patients in the country’s premier, with a very rich clinical experience in the treatment, with the acquisition of new laser equipment, hardware configuration in the domestic counterparts in the forefront. Ultra-pulse CO2 fractional laser is the gold standard for acne scar treatment. 4, OPT light: for acne “acne marks” (erythema and hyperpigmentation) treatment, alone or combined with photodynamic treatment of skin photodamage. OPT optimal pulse technology non-invasive treatment, in a single course of treatment at the same time to improve a variety of skin problems, and overall enhancement of the skin texture. 5.Chinese medicine characteristic treatment: with the help of specific Chinese medicine, through facial acupoint massage, supplemented by plaster inversion or ultrasonic introduction, to promote drug absorption and epidermal metabolism, to improve facial circulation, to achieve anti-inflammatory, cleansing, elimination of pigmentation effect, used in the treatment of acne and “acne scars”, seborrheic dermatitis, melasma, and so on.
