How long can you live after splenectomy?

Splenectomy can have some effect on the body’s immunity, but patients can fully survive with a good postoperative recovery and generally have no special impact on life. The spleen is the main immune organ of the body, and after spleen removal, the immune function will be replaced by other immune systems, so there is no serious impact on the body after spleen removal. Patients who experience postoperative abdominal pain, bloating, anal discharge, and bowel movements should seek medical attention from general surgery or gastroenterology in a timely manner, as they are generally not life-threatening and can still survive for a long time. However, splenectomy should be beware of complications, such as severe infection, or accidental bleeding or surgical injury, which can lead to life-threatening conditions while the patient is healing or during the procedure. After splenectomy, there may be a need to pay attention to the hypercoagulable state of blood caused by excess blood cells because the metabolism of aging blood cells by the spleen is weakened. Patients are advised to strengthen their conditioning, improve their physical fitness, enhance their immunity, and eat more foods that are high in protein, rich in vitamins and high in iron.
