Serum detection of multiple anti ganglioside antibodies

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance and possible causes of the simultaneous positive results of serum tests for multiple anti ganglioside antibodies. METHODS: The clinical data of 11 patients with positive results of multiple ganglioside antibodies at the same time were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: All 11 patients showed positive results for anti-GM1-IgM and anti-GD1b-IgM antibodies, and clinical symptomatology and electrophysiological examination showed significant motor involvement but not sensory involvement. Seven of the patients also had positive anti-GQ1b-IgM antibodies and showed significant motor deficits, cranial nerve involvement, decreased tendon reflexes, and ataxia, with no significant sensory symptoms. Conclusion: Patients who showed positive results for multiple anti-ganglioside antibodies at the same time did not show the exact combination of symptoms corresponding to the corresponding individual anti-ganglioside antibodies, suggesting that there may be a specific mechanism for the presence of multiple anti-ganglioside antibodies.
