Depending on the etiology, the tests performed vary and should begin with a visit to the ENT department for fibreoptic rhinoscopy and endoscopy of the throat.
If accompanied by hypothyroidism or diabetes mellitus, basal metabolic rate, nail function or glucose measurement should be performed at the endocrinology department.
Esophageal endoscopy at the Department of Gastroenterology if accompanied by symptoms of upper gastrointestinal disease.
If all organic disorders are ruled out and functional disorders are considered, a psychiatric consultation should be sought.
