The diagnosis of syringomyelia depends mainly on history and physical examination, with imaging as an adjunct. Therefore, when a patient comes in, the doctor will first ask about any previous history of inflammation, trauma or tumour, after which the patient will be examined and can usually make a basic judgement as to whether or not it is a syringomyelia. If a differential diagnosis is needed, an ultrasound examination of the scrotum may be performed.
