How can I take care of myself after a breast biopsy?

Your doctor may recommend a breast biopsy, where cells or tissue from the area suspected of having a lesion are cut and examined under a microscope. This is the only way to determine if the underlying lesion is cancerous. The breast biopsy site may require a special bra and dressing for a few days after the biopsy. Small tapes or sutures will remain at the incision site. No attempt should be made to remove them yourself. It may be removed at the follow-up visit or you may wait for it to come off on its own.

It may be necessary to apply medication to the biopsy area, apply ice, or change your own bandages at home. The healthcare provider will provide information on showers, soaks, and wound care.

If needed, pain medication may be ordered. To reduce the risk of bleeding, do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin for the first 3 days after surgery, unless otherwise ordered by your doctor.

The biopsy area may also turn dark and purple for a few days afterwards.
