Best time to remove nails from fractures

The time to remove the steel pin after a fracture needs to be determined by the patient’s age, the fracture site and the postoperative recovery, and cannot be generalized. In children, it is usually necessary to remove the internal fixation pins in 2-3 weeks after the fracture is repositioned and internally fixed, without waiting for the fracture to heal completely. In adults, it is also necessary to remove the internal fixation in about 6 weeks to avoid stiffness of the joint, which may affect the weight-bearing movement of the adult hand and foot. For other fractures and fractures in the elderly, the pins should be removed only after the fracture has fully recovered from surgical repositioning and internal fixation, which usually takes 4-6 months for the upper extremity and 6-8 months for the lower extremity. If the fracture is poorly recovered due to underlying disease, it may take longer to remove the internal fixation. Therefore, different fracture cases need to be treated differently. Patients need to strictly follow medical advice, actively cooperate with the treatment, pay attention to rest, and eat a balanced diet so that they can recover as soon as possible.
