How long to stay in hospital for a spinal fracture

When a fracture occurs in the spine, the length of hospitalization must vary depending on the severity of the fracture and the type of treatment. In the case of mild compression fractures, the fracture can usually be cured by conservative treatment, and the hospital stay is about 1 week. When the pain of the local fracture is basically relieved and there are no complications such as constipation or intestinal obstruction, the patient can be discharged home to rest slowly in bed and wait for the fracture to grow back. In the case of elderly compression fractures, vertebroplasty can be done and the patient can be discharged in about 3-5 days after surgery. In the case of severe spinal fractures that result in spinal nerve damage, the fracture needs to be internally fixed and rehabilitation must be done after surgery. The duration of rehabilitation can vary, depending on the degree of recovery of the nerve, from 1 month in a mild case to 3-6 months in a severe case.
