The main reason is that jewellery that is not sterilised can contain a large amount of bacteria, which can be carried directly into the artificial holes in the ear when worn, and therefore cause ear infections. Some patients are allergic to the material of the jewellery they are wearing and can be replaced with a non-allergenic material.
