(Vibrating capsule with battery and electric motor) This capsule is 15.5 mm long and weighs 10 grams. Inside the capsule is a miniature electric motor and a miniature battery. This motor is positioned off-center so that the capsule will constantly rotate, shake and roll when the switch is flipped. The vibrating capsule is swallowed for 6 hours (the time it is estimated to have reached the intestines) and then automatically begins to vibrate, shake and roll continuously, stimulating the intestinal muscles and prompting the intestines to begin natural peristalsis and triggering a bowel movement, and then the vibrating capsule is expelled with the stool. The advantage of this new method is that there are no side effects. Although the 30 people who participated in the first clinical trials were not SCI patients, based on the same principle, if the vibrating capsule works well for constipation in the general population, it should also help SCI patients to have a bowel movement. It’s too early to tell if it works, but we can look forward to it.
