The presence of phlegm in the baby’s throat is not necessarily the result of pneumonia. Usually when pneumonia occurs, the cough and sputum are more severe, and the cough is deeper and so is the sputum, which rarely manifests itself as phlegm in the throat. If there is phlegm in the throat, it is likely to be caused by inflammation of the throat or the trachea. This is often distinguished by a CT chest examination. When a chest CT is done, there will be significant abnormalities in pneumonia, but in the case of bronchitis or pharyngitis, there are often no significant abnormalities in the chest CT. In case of bronchitis or pharyngitis, it is better to choose appropriate antibiotics or antiviral drugs to be given orally to the baby according to the type of infection. It is also necessary to use cough medicines, such as aminoglutethimide oral solution. In the case of pneumonia, the baby should be hospitalized and should be treated with an intravenous drip of antibiotics or antiviral drugs depending on the type of infection.
