The need for bed rest after surgical treatment of lumbar disc herniation is related to the mode of surgery. Removal of the nucleus pulposus under foraminoplasty requires only 6-24 hours of bed rest, which means that normal activities can be performed in bed after 6-24 hours after surgery; for severe spinal stenosis or slipped vertebrae, open lumbar disc surgery and vertebral body fusion surgery are performed, bed rest is required for 1 week, and it takes 3 months to resume normal activities. Avoid heavy lifting, sneezing and coughing during the recovery period after lumbar disc herniation surgery. Bending over to carry heavy objects, sneezing and coughing can cause a sharp increase in pressure within the lumbar disc.
