External fixation through a cast after tibial fracture promotes fracture healing, and if the fracture heals well, the cast can be removed 4-6 weeks after fixation. The specific time depends on the age of the patient. If the patient is a teenager, the growth rate is relatively fast and the cast can be considered to be removed 3-4 weeks after fixation if there is obvious bone scab formation. If it is an elderly patient, the growth rate of the body is relatively slow, and the time of cast fixation will be relatively delayed, probably to about 8 weeks. Removal of the cast can only be considered after the formation of bone scabs is evident through local radiography. Removing the cast too early may affect the stability of the fracture site, and removing the cast too late may lead to stiffness of the joint and affect the healing. After removal of the cast, functional exercises should be performed under the guidance of the doctor to reduce complications.
