How long after fracture surgery to remove the plate

The time to remove the plate after fracture surgery depends on the site of surgery and the extent of fracture growth, usually between 12 and 18 months. However, before removing the plate, it is important to go to the hospital for an X-ray to confirm that the fracture is completely healed. If there are special circumstances, early removal of the plate may be considered. If an internal fixation plate is used after fracture surgery, the plate will need to be removed at a later stage and the time for removal is not fixed. For fractures of some body parts, such as finger fractures, the plate can be removed in half a year; in case of long thigh bone or lumbar fracture, the plate should be removed after 1-2 years so as not to cause secondary fracture at the broken end of the fracture too early; and for plates of special parts, such as plates at the pelvis, removal is usually not recommended. In addition, when the fracture is healed and the plate is removed, the patient can resume normal activities after the surgical incision is healed. However, it is necessary to prevent trauma and excessive exertion for 3 months after surgery to prevent the fracture site from reoccurring.
