What diseases are treated with cardiac surgery?
The heart is an important organ of the body, the “engine”, and early treatment of common heart diseases can prevent some serious consequences.
Some heart diseases can be effectively cured or relieved with medication by consulting internal medicine or pediatrics.
However, there are some heart diseases that can only be effectively treated with cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery can treat the following heart diseases.
1. congenital heart disease: Liu Luqi, Department of Cardiac Surgery, Shandong Qianfo Mountain Hospital
This disease is commonly known as a disease brought about in the mother’s womb, usually a problem with the development of the heart (malformation), such as an extra orifice (that is, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect), or after birth, the channel that should be closed is not closed (ductus arteriosus), or many problems in one piece (tetralogy of Fallot), etc. There are more than 20 kinds of malformations, because it has grown into that abnormal shape, so drugs can not be cured. However, surgery can effectively correct these abnormalities by blocking the abnormal orifices, ligating the unclosed ducts, correcting abnormal development, etc. Surgery is the only effective and lifelong cure.
Some precordial diseases may not appear to be abnormal, or only have purple lips, poor development and other characteristics, so they are often ignored by parents, but the doctor can hear murmurs during physical examination, and then once the “heart ultrasound” will be all clear, it is necessary to make a special point that some heart disease, if treated late, will lose the opportunity to cure, resulting in lifelong regret. It is important to mention that if some heart diseases are treated late, the chance to cure them will be lost, causing lifelong regret.
We have more than 20 years of experience in cardiac surgery to treat these diseases, and we are well established in various methods, including transcatheter umbilical block, small incision minimally invasive surgery, and conventional surgery. We are able to treat patients from a few months to adults with satisfactory surgical results, which are well received by patients.
2. Heart valve disease
There are four sets of “valves” inside the heart that control the blood from flowing backwards, and these valves are called “heart valves”. When the valves close or fail to open, blood will flow backwards or become blocked, affecting the normal function of the heart and causing discomfort. The technical term for this is “heart failure”. Such diseases are often caused by “rheumatism” or “hypertension” and are called “rheumatic heart disease” and “degenerative heart valve disease. “The heart ultrasound can easily make an accurate diagnosis. An accurate diagnosis can easily be made by cardiac ultrasound. For mild valve disease, medication can be given and observed at all times; for moderate or severe valve disease, surgery should be considered because a “bad valve” is a substantial tissue change and medication will not work.
Heart valve surgery is a mature surgical technique that has been performed for more than 50 years, and the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Shandong Qianfo Mountain Hospital has been performing it for nearly 30 years, completing thousands of surgeries, including “valvuloplasty (repair of damaged valves)” and “valve replacement surgery”.
Valve replacement surgery is the replacement of a valve, and the results of the surgery are very positive. The prosthetic valve material used is divided into two types: mechanical and biological, which the surgeon chooses according to the needs of the condition. Mechanical valve life is lifelong, but the need to take a lifetime of anticoagulants, the monthly cost of drugs about 8 yuan; biological valve life of 10-20 years, without long-term medication, but the possibility of re-operation.
Now our hospital cardiac surgery is the first hospital in the province to carry out, minimally invasive heart valve direct vision surgery, which is less invasive and faster recovery, and is the preferred treatment for future patients.
3. Coronary heart disease
The full name of coronary heart disease is “coronary atherosclerotic heart disease”, which refers to the problem of blood vessels supplying the heart, narrowing or inaccessibility of blood vessels, resulting in ischemic necrosis of the heart and life-threatening death. The number of patients suffering from coronary heart disease has increased significantly due to over-nutrition, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and smoking and drinking.
The common manifestation of coronary heart disease is chest tightness or pain in the anterior chest area. ECG and angiography are effective methods to diagnose coronary heart disease. What should I do if my blood vessels are not working? Patients with mild cases can be treated with medication first, aiming at treating the primary diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, while dilating blood vessels, lowering blood lipids and reducing blood viscosity.
For patients who are not suitable for stent treatment, they need surgical methods to connect the blood vessels, which is called “coronary artery bypass surgery”.
Nowadays, the popular non-stop bypass surgery is a surgical method with little damage, fast recovery and good effect.
4. macrovascular disease, heart transplantation and others
For example, if the heart is the root of a tree, the large blood vessels originate from the heart, like the trunk of a large tree, and the branches emanating from it are the branch vessels supplying the head and all the important parts of the body, so it can be seen that the problem of large blood vessels (trunk) is of great importance and danger.
A common lesion in the aorta is a coarctation aneurysm, which means that the outer wall of the trunk is broken, delaminated, and not strong enough to deliver blood to the “branches”, and there is also a risk of sudden rupture. The patient will usually experience severe pain in the back, and if the vessel ruptures and bleeds profusely, the patient will die immediately. The risk of this disease is enormous, and once the diagnosis is established, the patient should be immediately braked, the pressure lowered, the pain relieved, and transferred to a higher level hospital for surgery as soon as possible. The best way to confirm the diagnosis is CT examination. Our hospital cardiac surgery department has the capability of independent surgery and stent placement treatment. There is some experience in treatment.
What should I do if my heart itself has lost its function due to cardiomyopathy, etc.? The answer is “heart transplantation”. The engine is broken and replaced by a new engine, which fundamentally solves the power problem, so the effect of heart transplantation is imaginable. Currently this is a highly organized and difficult surgery, the province’s only hospital has access to carry out this surgery, but also has successfully completed dozens of cases of surgery, is the first in the province.
Other types of surgery include cardiac tumors, rare malformations, and pericardial diseases, which are rare but in our cardiac surgery department, honed over decades, specialists are capable of providing successful treatment.
Introduction of our team
The Department of Cardiac Surgery was founded in 1983 with 40 beds. After nearly 30 years of development and growth, it has now become a first-class medical specialty department with complete medical, teaching and research teams, strong talent and technical strength, advanced medical facilities, and a high reputation in the province. There are 8 full and associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor and 5 master supervisors. Among them, 6 people have the experience of foreign study rotation, there are not only the senior experts and professors who are famous inside and outside the province, but also the high level of young professional and technical force, which has completed more than 5000 cases of various cardiac surgeries, and has been awarded the key discipline of cardiovascular medicine in Shandong Province since June 1999. Liu Lu Qi, M.D., professor of Shandong University, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, well-known expert in the treatment of coronary heart disease is the current director of the department.
