Recently, a new form of Chinese medicine has become popular throughout the country, namely no-decoction granules, which are convenient to take and not too expensive, and have the potential to replace traditional Chinese medicine tablets. In the clinic, many patients ask me, “Is the effect of no-decoction granules the same as that of traditional tablets? Which one is better to use? I think this is a question that no responsible doctor can answer accurately, because it requires investigation. So far, there is no large sample of scientific research results to support that no-decoction granules are more effective, and when I visited a granule manufacturer, I also heard the manufacturer’s boss personally say that the ultimate goal of our no-decoction granules is to approach the effect of traditional drinking tablets without limit. However, after all, granules are too convenient to take, no decoction is needed, and since they are solid, they are much less troublesome to preserve. However, we can’t help but to compare the similarities and differences between these two methods in private. The traditional decoction method: The traditional method of decocting Chinese medicine is to take the herbal tablets from the herbal pharmacy and decoct them in a casserole. The decoction of drugs is very delicate, some are decocted first, some are decocted afterwards, some need to be wrapped in cloth, some need to be decocted separately, some drugs need to be decocted for more than an hour, some drugs can be put inside 10 minutes before the pot, which is very delicate and troublesome. No-decoction pellets are made with high-tech technology to extract the whole ingredients of each Chinese medicine into granular finished products, which are stored in pharmacies and dispensed by machine according to the dosage required by the patient, and the dispensed pellets are molded into small bags, which the patient can take home and flush with boiling water. We can see that the difference between the two methods is that with traditional tablets, there is a process of decoction in a pot at high temperature, while with no-decoction pellets there is none. No-decoction pellets just extract the whole ingredients of each drug and then take them with boiling water. In this way, there is no chemical reaction between the various drugs in no-decoction pellets, which makes them appear to be “raw” (according to Chinese medicine, the process of harmonization of medicinal properties is missing). In order to eliminate this, a good way is to put the granules in a bowl, add the right amount of water and boil it in a pot before taking, so that the drugs can have a “harmonization” process before taking, which can improve the effect of the granules. Therefore, it is better to decoct the granules without decoction.
